CRYPTACIZE > Mythomania

Bolder and more focused than on their debut, Cryptacize ties together the elements that were previously scattered through their sound with Mythomania. They do this by honing their weirdness into more obvious melodic motifs, and allowing guitarist Chris Cohen to turn up the distortion as if he was still a member of Deerhoof. Even so, it’s still a slippery album to grasp, shifting from Western guitar lines and sparkly synth ruptures (“Tail & Main”) to fizzy, autoharp-led ‘60s pop (“Blue Tears”) and careening garage pop sing-alongs (“The Cage”).
