Kelly Sweet Overcomes Personal Tragedy With “You And I”

Videos by American Songwriter

It’s easy to imagine this moving song from L.A. pop-songstress Kelly Sweet becoming a massive hit, despite the fact that it’s actually got a lot of substance to it.

Sweet, who opened for Paul Simon on his Surprise tour,  explains the origins of “You And I”:

“I wrote the song shortly after my mother passed away, which was just over a year ago. I was missing her intensely in those days, and couldn’t stop wondering where she was and how I could ever feel connected to her again. It was like I was looking for some sign of her everywhere. One afternoon, this song poured out of me along with a lot of tears . . . It really felt like she came through me to give me this message and remind me of exactly where she is. My father passed away a few months later, and I sang it at his memorial. ‘You And I’ always reminds me that both of them are with me, now and forever.”
