Do you ever just look at one musician and think they couldn’t exist without a predecessor? Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and Oasis, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer are just a few pairs that come to mind. One more pair to add to that list is Prince and Lenny Kravitz, as Kravitz’s style, aesthetic, and professional disposition would have been entirely different if it wasn’t for Prince.

The age gap between Prince and Kravitz wasn’t substantial, but Prince’s career took off approximately 10 years before Kravitz’s career did. This means that Kravitz listened to, embodied, and adopted some of Prince’s musical tendencies. However, Lenny Kravitz didn’t just know and love Prince through his music. Rather, they spent a great many nights together before Prince’s passing in 2016 and had a stellar friendship.
The Small Moments Between Prince and Lenny Kravitz Were Meaningful
As most people might know, friendships are sometimes made through grandiose gestures. But most of the time, they’re made through small and insignificant moments. And that is exactly what seemingly bonded Prince and Lenny Kravitz.
In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Kravtis stated that he knew Prince “very well.”
“He used to call me late, late at night to meet him at a club to go play,” Kravitz recalled. “You know, just set up and go play. Those were really great nights that were just so free and fun.”
Kravitz also recalled a pretty hilarious musical memory between himself, Prince, and the King of Pop Michael Jackson.
“We would go see Michael [Jackson] in the studio and just mess with him,” Kravitz told Lowe. “It was more about having fun and sort of joking around with him. Like, let’s go f*ck with Michael, you know.”
Thanks to their boyish antics, Kravitz and Prince’s relationship ran far deeper than any piece of music they worked on together. In short, they were just good buddies.
“Just going to his house to watch funny movies or comedians, he was really, really funny,” Kravitz continued. “He had an amazing sense of humor.”
In light of their bond, after Prince passed away in 2016, Lenny Kravitz paid tribute to his purpleness at the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, no one song nor grand gesture could commemorate the many momentous memories the two shared.
