Listen: Dex Romweber Duo, “Jungle Drums”

On July 26, the Dex Romweber Duo will release Is That You In the Blue? (Bloodshot Records), their sophomore record following 2009’s Ruins Of Berlin.

Our favorite Silvertone 1448-bearing force of nature (that’d be Dex) was no doubt inspired by sis Sara’s wild rhythmic assault on the aptly-titled first single, “Jungle Drums.”

The barely intelligible lyrics are classic Romweber. The first bit goes “jungle drums are beating, right outside my door, rocking to the rhythm, one, two, three, four”; you win a pat on the back if you can figure out the second part, which ends with the advisory, “better watch out for the girls I knew.”

After Dex takes a classic, down-and-dirty guitar solo, a bonafide ‘sax-a-ma-phone’ cleans up on a second chorus in the barely two-minute gem.

“Jungle Drums” puts front and center what Romweber does best: encapsulates the history of Jerry Lee Lewis’ rowdy rockabilly and the earliest, rawest form of Chuck Berry’s rock and roll in three chords. The dude invented the guitar-drums punk-blues. And he hasn’t lost a bit of steam since the Duo Jets were banging it out in ’80s Chapel Hill.
