FROM EVERY ENTRY, DOWN TO ONE

The American Songwriter team narrows the field to ten. The public vote sends two to the stage, our team picks a third, and the night decides the winner. Every round comes with something to win, not just the final one.
All Everyone who enters Every entry gets watched by the American Songwriter team, and the top entries get flagged for Savage Music A&R. That flag does not wait on the vote and it does not depend on making the ten.
10 The Ten Featured on americansongwriter.com with your performance, in front of our readers and open to a public vote.
2+1 How the three are set The two highest vote totals take two of the three slots, and the top vote-getter closes the night. The third is our team's pick, so a standout performance can reach the stage without topping the vote.
3 The Three On Stage A full slot at an iconic Nashville music venue, a standalone feature of your own, $500 cash, up to $750 travel, and two mentorship sessions: one with Savage Music A&R, one with an established music manager.
1 The Winner $1,500 total, decided by the room, the online vote, and our team. Nobody knows the result walking in.
$2,500 in cash across three artists · Travel reimbursed up to $750 each · Full prize terms

WHAT YOU SEND

Each entry is one song in one take. Have more songs? Enter each one separately.
Already posted counts Paste the link. It just has to open without logging in.
Any shape, any platform Vertical or landscape. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or Drive.
Yours or somebody else's Originals and covers are judged the same way.
One rule The audio has to be the audio from the room. Live vocal. No lip syncing, no overdubs, no cuts.
WHAT WE SCORE Production is not scored. A phone video is judged exactly the same as a professional shoot.
The song What you do with it, and whether it holds up on a second listen.
The voice Tone, control, and feel.
The artist What makes you unmistakably you. Something we have not seen or heard before.
Holding a room Whether people stop and watch you.

HOW IT WORKS

Six weeks to enter. Then the ten, the vote, and a Nashville stage for the three who come through it.
Enter Send a video of you performing one song. Something already on your feed works. Original or cover, any genre, any room. Oct 1 → Nov 12 · 11:59 PM CT
Make the ten The American Songwriter team watches every entry and names ten. Nobody votes their way in. American Songwriter · Every Entry
Win the vote All ten go up on americansongwriter.com, each with your performance. The top two by vote take two stage slots, the top vote-getter closes the show, our team names the third, and the rest stand as alternates in vote order. Public Vote · Free To Vote
Take the stage One night at an iconic Nashville music venue. You play a full slot, and the winner is named from the stage before anyone leaves. Nashville · Early 2027
American Songwriter premiere issue, August 1984, featuring Merle Haggard on the cover Premiere issue, August 1984
WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR WHO IS NEXT SINCE 1984 Merle Haggard was on the first cover. So was a contest looking for emerging talent. For 40+ years American Songwriter has covered the people who write the songs, before the deal and before the room got big, back when the only proof was the song itself. That has not changed. This is the stage we built to put them on.

NO STUDIO. NO SECOND TAKE.
NOTHING BETWEEN YOU AND THE ROOM.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What exactly do I submit?A link to a video of you performing one song. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or a Drive link, in any orientation. Already posted counts: if there is a clip on your feed where you played well, paste that. It has to open without logging in and stay public, unchanged, through the end of the contest. We share finalists' performances during the public vote, so a link that comes down or goes private disqualifies the entry. Shot it on your phone and never posted it? Upload it to YouTube as unlisted, or to Google Drive with sharing set to "anyone with the link," and paste that link. A professionally shot video is welcome but never required: we score the performance, not the production.
Does a music video or a recording count?Only if you are actually performing in it. A finished record with you miming to it, or a track with no video of you playing, is a record, not a performance. We want the vocal that happened when the camera was rolling. A phone video in your kitchen clears the bar.
How much does it cost to enter?$10 per entry through October 15 at 11:59 PM CT, then $15 through the close on November 12. Each entry covers one video of one song. Enter as many times as you like and each one is judged on its own. Entry fees are non-refundable.
Who can enter?Independent, unsigned, self-releasing, or on an indie label, from anywhere in the world. Artists signed to a major label or one of its imprints are not eligible. Online creators encouraged. Every genre. If you are performing an original, it has to be yours to perform. Under 18? You need permission from a parent or guardian to enter.
Who watches, and when will I hear back? The American Songwriter team, backed by a brand that has championed songwriters since 1984. They watch for craft, originality, and what happens when you play. The ten are named about two to three weeks after entries close, then the vote sets the three who play. Every entrant gets a submission confirmation.
Do I need an audience to make the ten?No. Our team picks the ten before any voting opens, and one of the three stage slots is our team's pick rather than a vote result. An audience helps you win the vote. It cannot get you into the ten, and it is not the only road to the stage.
How does the voting work?Once the ten are named, all ten go up on americansongwriter.com with your performance on the page. Voting is free. The two highest totals take two of the three stage slots, and our team names the third. The top vote-getter also takes the closing slot and walks into the final with the full online vote, 40% of the winner decision. Everyone else in the ten becomes an alternate in vote order, so if a spot opens, the next in line is the first call. Full voting rules are in the official rules.
How is the winner decided? On the night, at the show. All three play a full slot, then three things decide it: the room's vote (40%), the online vote winner (40%), and the American Songwriter team (20%). Our team's score also breaks any tie. The winner is announced from the stage, and nobody knows the result walking in.
Do I have to perform, and do you cover travel? All three play the showcase in person. The performance is the point, for you and for the room. Each artist gets up to $750 in travel reimbursement toward getting to Nashville, against receipts submitted within 30 days of the showcase. Anything past that is on you.
Is the showcase the only thing you are picking for?No. Our team flags the strongest entries for Savage Music A&R as they come in, before the ten are named and separate from the vote. The artists we want to keep working with, we contact, and some of those conversations lead to a label, publishing, or distribution. None of that is promised and none of it is part of the prize. Making the ten is not the gate, and missing it is not a no.
