On This Day in 1997, Garth Brooks Released His Record-Breaking Diamond Certified Album ‘Sevens’

On this day (November 25) in 1997, Garth Brooks released his seventh studio album, Sevens. The album was a massive success for Brooks, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Albums chart and the all-genre Billboard 200. It was his final album to receive a Diamond certification from the RIAA. Most impressively, though, the album broke a chart record.

In the weeks following the release of Sevens, several songs from the album landed on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. All told, 12 of the record’s 14 tracks landed at various positions on the chart. This brought Brooks the record for having the most songs on the chart simultaneously. That, in and of itself, is impressive. More impressively, though, is the fact that it wasn’t the first time he broke the record.

Garth Brooks Breaks His Own Chart Record

Garth Brooks achieved the record for having the most tracks on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the first time with his 1995 album Fresh Horses. The album didn’t see the same amount of chart success as Sevens. However, it came close. Fresh Horses climbed to the top of the Top Country Albums chart and peaked at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart.

Upon its release, eight of the ten tracks from Fresh Horses landed on the Hot Country Songs chart simultaneously. Check out the list below.

  • “It’s Midnight Cinderella”
  • “She’s Every Woman”
  • “The Beaches of Cheyenne”
  • “The Change”
  • “That Ol’ Wind”
  • “The Fever”
  • “The Old Stuff”
  • “Rollin’”

Breaking his own chart record was a feather in Brooks’ hat. However, Sevens was a special album for him which likely made its positive reception all the more gratifying. “I’m proud, I’m excited, I’m nervous, and it feels good to be back in the game again,” he said ahead of the album’s release. “This is a very personal album. I only wrote six of the songs but there are many that are so ‘me’ that people I work with every day thought I wrote them,” he added.
