Orchestral Version of The Who’s “The Seeker” Featuring Pete Townshend, from His Wife’s New Multimedia Project

A new orchestral version of The Who’s 1970 hit “The Seeker” has been released as the first single from the upcoming multimedia project The Seeker by Pete Townshend’s wife, singer/composer Rachel Fuller. The new rendition of the song features lead vocals by South African singer/songwriter Nakhane, additional vocals by Townshend, and musical accompaniment by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir.

The track is available now via digital formats and streaming services. It features a dramatic, Indian-inspired music arrangement. In addition, a companion music video featuring Nakhane and Townshend has debuted on The Seeker project’s official YouTube channel.

As previously reported, The Seeker is a book-and-album project inspired by Hermann Hesse’s 1922 novel Siddhartha that will be released on November 7. Fuller wrote and composed The Seeker, with additional music and lyric contributions from Townshend. The book features text and illustrations that tell the story of Siddhartha and his quest for spiritual enlightenment.

In addition to the aforementioned Townshend, Nakhane, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the album features contributions from Elton John, Emeli Sandé, Bollywood star Sunidhi Chauhan, and others. Late actor Christopher Plummer served as the narrator of the story.

About the Concert Celebrating The Seeker’s Release

To celebrate the release of The Seeker, a special concert will take place on November 6 in London. The show, which will be held at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, will feature performances by Townshend and some of the other singers featured on the album, as well as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and choir.

Award-winning British actor and singer Alfie Boe also is part of the concert’s cast. Boe’s credits include Classic Quadrophenia, an orchestral version of The Who’s 1973 album Quadrophenia featuring arrangements created by Fuller.

On The Seeker album, Nakhane portrays Siddhartha, while Townshend plays a character called the Ferryman. The black-and-white video for “The Seeker” appears to be a dramatic enactment of a scene from the story. The clip initially features Nakhane walking through a forest. Later on, Nakhane has joined Townshend in a row boat that Pete is paddling on a river as the two sing the song.

More About The Seeker Project

The Seeker will be released separately as an illustrated book and a two-LP vinyl set. A limited-edition version featuring both the book and the album also will be available. In addition, the album will be available via digital formats.

The Seeker book is a 128-page publication featuring illustrations by Emelia Wharfe, and the lyrics and narrative from the album.

The album also includes a new orchestral version of the 1971 Who song “Bargain.” In addition, it features original Townshend solo songs he wrote in 1976 for a friend’s amateur stage play based on Siddhartha.

Fuller also recently launched a podcast focusing on The Seeker project. The first episode is available now. It features Fuller in conversation with Townshend about his spiritual beliefs, as well as about various aspects of The Seeker.
