Pure Grain has been delivering their high-proof distillation of country, rock, blues, and soul for more than 20 years. Tragically, their frontman, Chris “Carolina Kidd” Taber, passed away in 2020. Ryan Moore, a longtime friend and follower of the band, stepped up to fill his spot. So, it is fitting that he penned the band’s first new release since Taber’s passing. American Songwriter is proud to premiere “Grass Stains” from the band’s forthcoming album a day ahead of its wide release on Friday (June 13).

“Grass Stains” isn’t just a touching and relatable single about childhood and growing up. It is also the first page of the band’s next chapter. After five years of healing, preparing, and playing live shows, they’re ready to release new music with Moore helming the band. It’s a new beginning and the first look at the album fans of Pure Grain have been waiting to hear.
Pure Grain Discusses “Grass Stains”
Ryan Moore, who wrote “Grass Stains,” and Brian DeBruler, drummer and founding member of Pure Grain, spoke to American Songwriter about the song ahead of today’s premiere.
“It was inspired by my 6-year-old daughter Amelia,” Moore says of the song. “I was down in my music room and she came down all dressed up, and when I saw her, she looked more like 16 instead of 6. I said to her, ‘Honey, you’re growing up way too fast.’ Her reply was, ‘Dad, I’m never growing up,’” he recalls.
“It made me realize when you’re that young, you really don’t realize how fast time is moving,” Moore adds. “And you don’t really know you’re growing up. The song literally came to life in that moment and nearly wrote itself. I’ve never felt musically more at home than with my Pure Grain family.”
DeBruler spoke about “Grass Stains” as well as what Moore brings to the band. “When Ryan came into the picture, things just started coming back together. The band has been around a long time, and with that much history, we are like family,” he says. “With Ryan now fronting the band, we feel like our family is once again complete. It is a whole new generation of the band’s legacy. ‘Grass Stains’ is a song everyone can relate to about reflecting on your own childhood and how fast things move in life,” he adds. “To release this in time for Father’s Day and in honor of our fallen brother, The Carolina Kidd, it couldn’t feel more right.”
