Recently in Russia the General Prosecutor’s Office announced a ban of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The ban is nationwide and cites the foundation’s alleged opposition of Russian “traditional spiritual and moral values.”

Russia’s ban includes both the U.S. and U.K. iterations of Elton John’s foundation, which operate under the same name. According to the general prosecutor, the foundations have been deemed “undesirable organizations.” The prosecutor’s office also released a statement essentially condemning the foundation.
“When a musician plays along with the promoters of democracy, you get propaganda,” the statement reads, released on the general prosecutor’s official Telegram account per a report from Reuters. “And if Elton John is at the piano, it is not just anti-Russian propaganda.” The statement continues, “The NGOs actively participate in an information campaign orchestrated by the ‘collective West’ to discredit traditional values and escalate social tensions.”
The main complaint by the general prosecutor seems to be that the Elton John AIDS Foundation seemingly promotes “non-traditional sexual relationships, Western family models, and gender reassignment,” according to a separate statement on its website.
Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Blacklisted in Russia as Country Claims Promotion of “Non-Traditional” Values
Elton John has been raising money through concerts and funding HIV treatment programs all over the world since the foundation’s inception in 1992. The foundation also advocates for LGBTQ+ communities globally. While HIV does not exclusively affect LGBTQ+ communities—exposures can also occur through heterosexual encounters (22% of infections) or intravenous drug use (7% of infections)—the disease does disproportionately affect those communities, especially men. However, according to a 2022 report by HIV.gov, the total number of infections decreased 10% in the U.S. since 2018.
LGBTQ+ communities in Russia, especially, have faced persecution for decades, as well as legislation that aims to uphold “traditional spiritual and moral values,” as mentioned in the statement. The general prosecutor claimed that the foundation holds “negative attitudes” toward all countries that aim to uphold those values. It also claimed Elton John and the foundation have worked to “discredit Russia” since 2022, when its invasion of Ukraine began.
Russia has the highest number of HIV and AIDS infections per capita in Europe, about 1.2 million people, according to Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian national public health organization.
Elton John, however, has a large and loyal fanbase in Russia. He often sells out shows there, and after a run of shows in 2014, he penned an open letter condemning the country’s treatment of its LGBTQ+ communities and its “gay propaganda” legislation.
At this time, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has not released an official response to the ban.
