Videos by American Songwriter

The Artist: Australian-born blues and jazz songstress Anne McCue

The Song: “Dig Two Graves,” off her forthcoming album Blue Sky Thinkin,’ out February 10 via Flying Machine Records

Songwriter Says: This is a song I wrote with my good friends Bob Saporiti (Reckless Johnny Wales) and Brent Moyer (The Global Cowboy). Bob had been mulling over this quote from Confucius: “If you seek revenge you must dig two graves” and Brent had a great chord structure waiting in the wings when I suggested we write an upbeat number. I am a huge fan of gypsy jazz, Django Reinhardt being my favourite guitar player of all time, so this proved to be a vehicle for that style of music. We proceeded to write a film noir story of a gal in foggy Frisco seeking revenge on a no-good mean abuser. Think black and white, Sam Spade.

On the recording I get to play some Django-esue guitar parts while violinist Deanie Richardson (Patty Loveless, The Chieftans) takes the role of Stefan Grappelli. Dave Raven on drums gets to pull out his Gene Krupa moves. Carl Byron plays accordion, and Dusty Wakeman is on bass.
