Song Premiere: Jacob Jones Featuring Brittany Howard, “Play It Loud, Ray!”

Jacob Jones will ring in the New Year with Good Timin’ In Waynetown, a new album steeped in old-school rock & roll and ramshackle country. This week, he’s kicking off the good times with “Play It Loud, Ray!” The song keeps Jones’ rock and country roots alive, but it harks back to an earlier era, too, a time when those two styles hadn’t necessary split into their own genres. To drive home the vintage mood, Jones reached out to Alabama Shakes frontman Brittany Howard, who joined him in the studio for some soulful backup vocals.

“A couple years ago,” Jones tells American Songwriter, “I had a party at my house. My mom was teaching me the family secrets to frying chicken, and we were all listening to Ray Charles. The song basically wrote itself after that. We tracked that particular song at the Bomb Shelter in East Nashville, where the Alabama Shakes had just finished their record, and Brittany came in and just nailed the chorus with me. It was one of the easiest experiences I’ve ever had making music.”

Look for Good Timin’ In Waynetown on January 29th.
