Over the past fifteen years, Kendall Meade has run a record label, co-written with other artists, and worked on projects including Helium, The Spinanes, and Sparklehorse – but she always returns to Mascott, which she considers to be her musical home base. Mascott is set to release its fifth EP, The Cost/Amount EP on September 17. Meade co-wrote “Our Life,” a sweet song with an anthemic flair, with songwriter Jennifer O’Connor.

“I had started writing the song when I was on tour last summer [with her other band, Anders & Kendall]. Jennifer and I had talked about co-writing a song for the Mascott EP, so I played her the lyrics and melody that I had kicking around,” Meade tells American Songwriter. “She jumped right in and helped me finish it. We’ve always had an honest, straight-up friendship so it was really easy to work on together.”

O’Connor says working with Meade is intuitive because of their close friendship. “She had the guitar riff and fantastic melody already in place as well as a really clear vision of what she wanted the song to sound like – which was really useful in finishing it up,” she says. “I helped with refining the lyrics and adding a bridge. It was a blast. We recorded it the day after we wrote it and I think you can hear the excitement of that newness in there.”
