The Song: “Where You Been,” from a tyrant and lamb, due May 20.

Fun Fact: Conrad studied classical music at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts for twenty years; he started when he was three.

Songwriter Says: “When I moved to New York City in 2008 I was in pretty dire mental shape. I attribute much of my internal duress to a relationship that had fallen apart,” Conrad tells us. “At the time it seemed to me like that love was the only possible source of joy — it had infiltrated my memory and imprinted itself on every happy moment. Then it evaporated. I tried to distance myself from my desire, but poetry was always my undoing: Now that your skin is wilting / you look better, than ever before. In retrospect, I think the suffering was rooted in me. I wasn’t willing to face myself as the source, so I projected it onto the relationship. Hopefully I’m seeing more clearly now, at least a bit. Either way, that love made this song.”
