Despite all the chaos in the world today, Schematic‘s Dave Elkins is writing songs about sunshine and chirping birds. Formerly the lead singer and songwriter of alt-emo band Mae, Elkins has returned to the scene in a big way. A move to Nashville changed his perspective, bringing with it a fresh, peppier sound. It also gave us “All The Birds Are Singing,” a track off of Schematic’s upcoming release Color (n.) Inside The Lines.

“I remember walking to the back deck at the studio last spring, early in the morning, coffee in hand, getting ready to start a day of writing,” Elkins says. “The sun was already bright.  In the backyard at the studio you can always see rabbits, and squirrels and chipmunks and hear birds of all different colors chirping away.  I sang the words and melody at once and immediately heard the guitar riff in my head. ‘All the birds are singing, what a beautiful day.’”

“I wanted to write a feel good song about enchanted autumn days and summer nights.  I had so many of those when I was in college and on tour with my band, Mae.  Staying up all night, taking on any adventure that could come up and creating a few if one didn’t.  Beauty and wonder everywhere.”

Elkins’ wife doesn’t buy the story. “When I finished the song I played it for my wife and after hearing it once she said, ‘This is a song about sex!’ I like her account better.”

Color (n.) Inside The Lines will be released December 3. Listen to “All The Birds Are Singing” below.
