Songs You Need To Hear: Liz Phair, “Bollywood”

Videos by American Songwriter

To say that Liz Phair is no stranger to controversy would be putting it mildly. After becoming the queen of indie rock with her debut album Exile In Guyville, the sexy and talented songstress enraged her fan base by embracing mainstream pop music in 2003 with Liz Phair. But let’s be fair to Phair — she follows her own muse, no matter what.

Do you need more evidence? Than take a listen to “Bollywood,” the surprising new single off Funstyle, her first album in five years, which finds her rapping with gusto and grace about the ridiculousness of the music industry. It’s funny, adventurous, and strange.

Haters, keep on hating. Girl just wants to have fun.

  1. This is obviously a big middle finger to the record biz and is quite funny, but the rest of the album is full of some GREAT tunes! The most unique, honest, and unhinged she’s sounded in years. A true gem of an album.
