The Brutally Honest Maren Morris ‘Dreamsicle’ Track She Calls “A Cry for the People”

Some things in life are so annoyingly frustrating that all you can do is laugh about it, which is exactly what Maren Morris set out to do when writing the fifth track of her fourth studio album, Dreamsicle. The album, out in May 2025, comes on the heels of several major life changes Morris has gone through over the past several years, including a divorce from her ex-husband, Ryan Hurd, raising the son she had with Hurd, and coming out as bisexual.

In a December 2024 interview with Elle magazine, Morris described the album as a representation of “a lot of influences” and “a lot of leaps of faith.” Amid all that self-exploration and discovery, Morris also managed to write a hilarious and brutally honest track she (not so) jokingly called “ a cry for the people.”

Maren Morris Sings About Single Life In ‘Dreamsicle’ Track

A lot has happened to Maren Morris since she released her major label debut, Hero, in 2016. She married fellow singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd in 2018, had her first child with Hurd two years later, divorced Hurd in 2023, and announced her departure from the country music genre. These major life changes unsurprisingly showed up in her music, and her fourth studio album, Dreamsicle, is certainly no exception. As her first full-length record post-divorce, Morris used Dreamsicle as a means for exploring not only her musical style but also her identity, values, and even sexuality.

The fifth track on the album, “Bed No Breakfast,” is a testament to returning to the dating pool in the 2020s. (A place that most single folks would agree can be incredibly frustrating and annoying in the age of social media and dating apps.) “The whole process of writing that song made me laugh,” Morris told People in April 2025. “I was like, ‘This feels like a good time [to release this] in the current state of modern dating. It’s a cry for the people.”

In “Bed No Breakfast,” Morris sings to a lover whom she is not-so-subtly trying to kick out of her place. Hey, that was great, we should do this again soon, she begins. Hey, by the way, weren’t those your keys in your pants on the floor in the other room? Sun is coming through the curtains. I think I heard a bird chirping. Won’t you sleep better at your place? Ain’t no turning down the service. You’ll be happy. You deserve this. I hope you enjoyed your stay, but you can’t stay.

The Singer’s Signature Sass Isn’t Going Anywhere

When a musician releases their first album after a breakup, the songs are often vulnerable, even sad, as the artist tries to process their difficult emotions through music. And while there’s certainly some of that on Maren Morris’ fourth album, Dreamsicle, she didn’t want the entire record to be morose. “I wanted to one-two punch listeners with, yes, it has this soulful, healing vibe to the album,” she told People. “But there’s also a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor and realism.” “Bed No Breakfast” undoubtedly has both.

“This felt like a good shock to the system of like, ‘Wait, no. There’s still some Texan sass in there,’” she continued. As for modern dating? “I don’t have time for it. I guess that’s good, though. My priorities are correct. They need to be on work, myself, my son. If I have the time, I would never shut down to an opportunity to have a connection. But yeah, it’s not priority one. But it’s going.”
