It has been six years since The Devil Makes Three released their last full-length album, Chains Are Broken. More recently, the band released a two-song EP titled Ragged but Right which, it turns out, was the band stretching their legs. Today (October 31) they announced their next full-length studio album Spirits. Hear the album’s title track and lead single below.

The Devil Makes Three released their self-titled debut album in 2002 and caught the ears of fans of Americana, country, and folk music the world over. As time went on, their sound evolved and changed while sticking close to their folk roots. Chains Are Broken saw the biggest change yet with the addition of Stefan Amidon on drums. With Spirits, the band continues their evolution, blending the sound they found with Chains Are Broken with their stripped-down roots.
The songs on the forthcoming 13-track will deal with personal themes including grief, mortality, and personal reflection. “There’s a theme of ghosts and death running through this album,” shared frontman and principal songwriter Pete Bernhard.
“The world’s in a strange place right now. A lot of the songs on this record come from that place—trying to make sense of it all, whether it’s dealing with loss, addiction, or the way people are more divided than ever,” he explained. “At the end of the day, this band has always been about celebrating resilience. We’ve always found a way to push through and wanted to reflect that in this album,” he added.
Pete Bernhard on The Devil Makes Three’s New Single
Pete Bernhard also spoke about The Devil Makes Three’s latest single in press materials. “’Spirits’ is a song of grief and loss. In the span of four years, in succession, I lost my mother, brother, and childhood friend to illness, car accident, and heart attack,” he shared. “There were so many simultaneous memories of lost family and friends all at once. This song celebrates them and is an attempt to keep talking to the people we have lost. The spirits are with us.”
