Patterson Hood, “Come Back Little Star”

The lead single from Patterson Hood’s new solo album, Heat Lightning Rumbles In The Distance, finds the Drive-By Trucker working with a different sort of supergroup. Kelly Hogan wraps her harmonies around Hood’s rough, pockmarked voice, while father David Hood – longtime bassist for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section – gives the song a soulful anchor. To sweeten the deal, several Truckers make guest appearances, most notably pedal steel guitarist John Neff, who sweeps through the song’s empty spaces without crowding the cello and fiddle parts.
