The iconically controversial British punk bank, the Sex Pistols, have been playing off and on ever since their initial break-up in 1978. The break-up transpired just months before their bassist, Sid Vicious passed away in 1979. However, last fall, the punk band headed out on a reunion tour without their frontman, John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon.

The Sex Pistols and John Lydon have not stepped foot on stage with one another for 17 years, and according to Sex Pistols guitarist, Steve Jones, there is a very good reason for that. In light of their upcoming tour dates, Lydon sat down with Rolling Stone AU and divulged why they haven’t wanted to work with Lydon for the last 17 years.
Steve Jones Says The Sex Pistols & John Lydon “Don’t Talk”
In his interview with Rolling Stone AU, Jones simply divulged, “We don’t talk” and “The last time I spoke to him was 2008. But I wish him all the best. I really do. We had a great time when we were young, and it was life-changing for all of us.”
Jones continued, “But after the court case with Pistol it wasn’t even worth asking John [about the reunion tour]. I don’t think he was interested.” The court case Jones is mentioning is the legal conflict between Lydon, the Sex Pistols, and Danny Boyle over the licensing for Boyle’s documentary, Pistol.
Outside of his interview with Rolling Stone AU, Jones has voiced his opinion about the potential reunion with Lydon to NME. He told the publication, “I like John. He’s a funny guy; he’s got a great sense of humor and he’s sharp. It just kind of ran its course, that whole relationship.” “I wish him well. He’s going out this year, doing PiL again, and I hope he does well. I know he must be in a weird place, losing his wife and his best mate,” added Jones.
The estrangement between the two former bandmates is not one-sided, as John Lydon once told NME, “They’re dead to me” and “They’re poison.” Thanks to their history of antimosity, it seems John Lydon will never rejoin the Sex Pistols and Steve Jones. However, that isn’t stopping Jones and the group, as they will embark on their British tour on March 1.
