“Everyone I Know” is the latest single from Johanna Warren’s solo debut Fates. Warren, who also performs in the band Sticklips, is fresh off a busy year touring as a backup singer for Iron & Wine. Fates was recorded in upstate New York and is a contemplative, melancholy collection of songs that Warren says was deeply influenced by Elliott Smith’s self-titled album.

In Greek mythology, the Fates are the three goddesses that controlled the lives of human mortals. The video for “Everyone I Know,” filmed in Brooklyn in early 2014, was “inspired by the album title, Fates, hence the three figures mysteriously interacting with the narrator,” says Warren.

“You’re the only one who’s ever yours, but I want you to be mine,” Warren sings in the song’s haunting closing lines.

“When we recorded ‘Everyone I Know,’ everything clicked into place in terms of the overall sonic aesthetics of the album. I didn’t really know what I was making before this song,” says the singer-songwriter who, in addition to writing and singing each song on Fates, plays guitar, flute, and clarinet on the record.
