Vince Gill and Amy Grant Reveal the “Profound” Reason They Don’t Collaborate More Often

Amy Grant and Vince Gill will celebrate 25 years of marriage today (March 10). They’ve been together longer than that and started as friends years before their relationship turned romantic. However, they don’t collaborate often outside of their annual Christmas residency at the Ryman in Nashville. The couple released their first-ever joint holiday album in 2024, which features one of only a handful of their recorded duets.

Vince Gill on Why He and Amy Grant Rarely Work Together

Vince Gill and Amy Grant work in different genres. Gill’s background is in country and bluegrass and he’s currently playing with the Eagles, one of the most successful rock bands in history. Grant, on the other hand, works largely in the world of Christian music and adult contemporary. However, their stylistic differences aren’t what keep them from cranking out duets.

“We don’t work together that much. We do the Christmas shows together and a little recording here and there,” Gill said. “But we had enough life under our belts to know we didn’t want to be all of the sudden Donny and Marie or Sonny and Cher or whatever. There was no point in that,” he explained. “Our worlds were very different so we just gave each other the grace to be what we’ve always been.”

At the same time, Gill pointed out that some friction can arise when they attempt to work together. “She made a point one time. She said, ‘When our heads butt when we’re working together it’s because we’re used to getting our way.’ That was really profound,” Gill said. “When I’m working I do whatever song I want, sing whatever song I want in whatever key I want in whatever setlist I want. She does the same thing. We get together and sometimes we don’t see eye to eye on how things should go,” he explained. “I’d rather be kind than be right and I think she would too.”
