Watch Hank Williams Jr. Sing Medley of His Father’s Songs on The Johnny Cash Show

Eventually landing in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2020, Hank Williams Jr. was born with country music in his blood. With Hank Williams his father, the country singer used his early years covering his songs on The Ed Sullivan Show. But as he grew older, Williams looked to carve out his own place in country music. And he did just that as he produced over 40 studio albums. His last, Rich White Honky Blues, hit shelves in 2022. Having a rich history in country music, his children and grandchildren appeared to follow in his footsteps. Looking back over his career, Williams once mesmerized Johnny Cash when performing “You Win Again,” along with a medley of other hits.

With Williams learning music from his father, the country star seemed to get a master class on showmanship. Needing nothing more than a mic and guitar, Williams let his voice do the talking as it complemented country music with each note. And when appearing on The Johnny Cash Show, Williams decided to cover his father’s song. Although not one of his, fans didn’t mind as the performance was nothing short of perfection.

Hank William Jr. Gains High Marks From Fans

Gaining thousands of views, the throwback performance received a great deal of praise from fans as comments included, “I saw this after I quit drinking not long ago and it really helped me in the first four days of this new life. Hank Jr I salute you and I’ll have a Pepsi next time I join you and your rowdy friends if you invite me!!!” Another fan added, “I watched the Johnny Cash Show religiously when it was on and either I don’t see this or I didn’t understand it, because seeing it now all I can say is holy s**t that was amazing.”

When stepping into the studio to record “You Win Again” for the first time, Williams Sr. remembered the date reading July 11, 1952. That date was important given that just one day before, Williams Sr. ended his marriage to Audrey Williams. Although just speculation, biographer Colin Escott suggested the country legend channeled his feelings at the time into the song.
