As previously reported Lennon’s One to One concerts, a pair of free shows that took place on August 30, 1972, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, serve as a launching point for the film. The concerts were the only full-length public performances Lennon ever gave after the breakup of The Beatles. John was accompanied at these concerts by Yoko, The Plastic Ono Band, Elephant’s Memory, and some special guests.
The movie features fully restored footage of the One to One shows, with newly remixed audio produced by John and Yoko’s son, Sean Ono Lennon. The film also boasts previously unseen video and unheard audio from Lennon’s archives. The material includes phone calls and home movies recorded by Lennon and Ono themselves.
About the One to One Trailer
The One to One trailer features a montage of scenes from the movie, including candid footage of Lennon and Ono in their apartment and around New York City.
The video also features clips from the One to One concerts, including footage of Lennon performing his classic song “Imagine.”
In addition, the trailer features audio from interviews and phone conversations John and Yoko had at the time.
Yoko is heard remarking, “The Flower Generation is over, but we can start all over again, right?”
In another audio clip, John comments, “I just got to see [Greenwich] Village for the first time. I really feel at home there.”
In yet another audio snippet, the outspoken Ono talks about how people perceived her at different points of her life.
“I was considered a bitch in this society,” she remarks. “Since I met John, I was upgraded into a witch.”
That clip is followed by audio of Lennon talking about his relationship with his wife.
“I fell in love with an independent, creative genius,” he says. “I started waking up.”
The trailer also features a clip of Lennon being interviewed about the One to One shows. The interviewer asks John why he’d do a concert for free.
“To change the apathy that all the youth have,” he replies. “Speak to them, sing to them, and do anything to get them alive again.”
As the promo ends, we hear an interviewer ask Lennon how he’d like himself and Ono to be remembered. “Just as two lovers,” he responds.
More About the Documentary
One to One: John & Yoko got its world premiere at Italy’s Venice Film Festival in August 2024. The movie was directed by Kevin Macdonald, who won a 2000 Oscar for best documentary for One Day in September. That film examined the murder of 11 Israeli athletes by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany.
One to One looks at how Lennon and Ono began to transform their approach to protest during their time spent in Greenwich Village.
In addition to the audio and video of Lennon and Ono, One to One features a montage of early-1970s American television footage to reflect the images the couple would have been bombarded with while watching TV in their apartment.
A replica of John and Yoko’s Greenwich Village residence was created for use in the documentary.
