Willie Nelson’s All-Star Musical Collaboration on “Song for You,” and the Trio’s Iconic Performance for Willie’s 70th Birthday

If you are a devout Willie Nelson fan and a well-read music historian, you know the origin story behind Nelson’s “Shotgun Willie” rebranding. Furthermore, you would also likely be well acquainted with his album debut Outlaw Country album, Shotgun Willie. The most listened-to songs on that album are surely “Shotgun Willie” and “Whiskey River.” However, don’t count out the heart-throbbing ballad, “A Song For You.”

Even though it is very reminiscent of Nelson’s lyrical and musical style in the songs “Hands on The Wheel” and “Georgia On My Mind,” it was not written by Nelson. Rather, Leon Russell originally wrote and released the song in 1970 on his debut solo album.

Although, when Willie Nelson got his hands on it he re-released a cover of it in 1973. But, the song did not start with Russel; and end with Nelson. Instead, years later, the two teamed up with the one and only Ray Charles.

Willie Nelson and His Team of Savants

Willie Nelson has always been outwardly expressive about the importance of Ray Charles and his music. Hence, the two have collaborated on numerous occasions. Most famously, they dueted in 1984 on the song “Seven Spanish Angels.” However, one of their most soul-crushing and heart-crunching collaborations came in 2003 at Willie Nelson’s 70th birthday concert.

With Russell and Charles on dueling pianos and Nelson on center stage, the trio takes turns singing the song’s verses. However, it’s not that simple, as each artist seemingly sings and plays each verse with their own personal genre twist. Russell leans more into the gospel side of things and Nelson stays loyal to his country style. Although, Ray Charles completely reinvents the song by playing a gospel piano rendition paired with his signature bluesy vocals. Additionally, his lengthy piano fills are nothing short of amazing.

In general, the performance between the three is quite a full-circle event. Nelson and Russell have been longtime collaborators, most notably, the two worked together on the 1979 album, One For The Road. The two have also performed several shows together live.

Outside of Nelson and Charles’ collaborations, the moment is seemingly special for Nelson given that it was yet another time where Nelson got to play with one of his favorite musicians. Lastly, it marked the last collaboration between the two, as Ray Charles tragically passed a year later. In totality, if you are an old soul, this performance is a perfected re-imaging of a timeless classic.
