She looks out on Boston Harbor
Hears the fog horn in the mist
Sailboats float on the salt breeze
She can taste on her lips
She’s jealous of the lighthouse
That’s where she wants to be
Far off from the city
A mile from misery

She grew up here an orphan
In the walls of her own home
Her daddy left for Baltimore
When she was four years old
Her mama sank down deep
Into a bottle of red
She could fill the North Atlantic
With the lonely tears she’s shed

Yeah, when she lets her hair down
And all the boys notice her
She gives half-hearted glances
But won’t step off the curb
She’s prettier than most sunsets
And moonlight on the bay
But her heart tells the story
Of a rose in the rain

Well I might give love a shot one day
She says to the sea
But the waves just keep on rolling
As if they don’t believe
Or maybe I’ll leave Boston
For Chicago or L.A.
But this anchor’s much too heavy
I’m moored and here to stay

As the wind blows through her dark hair
She looks up at the gray
And wonders how the sun feels
When clouds get in its way
When it pours is that God crying?
Is his wrath a hurricane?
Can he see her standing on the rocks?
Like a rose in the rain

The children on the beach are playing
Making castles in the sand
The people on a cruise ship wave
To their lovers back on land
A Romeo strums his guitar
A Juliet smiles at his side
A young mother rocks a cradle
And sings a sweet lullaby

And for a moment love is real
Then the moment runs away
She reaches out to grab it
But it’s gone like yesterday
The emptiness comes roaring back
Like a midnight train
And once again she feels
Like a rose in the rain
