28-Year-Old Country Singer Opens up About Her “Scary” Medical Condition: “Your Heart Can Just Stop, and You’re Just Gone”

Ashley Cooke is opening up about her health. In a recent interview, the country singer revealed that she was recently diagnosed with Brugada syndrome, a rare genetic heart condition that can cause dangerous, irregular heart rhythms.

“A lot of my family members have passed away unexpectedly, very healthy and very young, from it,” Cooke, 28, told Taste of Country. “So it’s very scary.”

Cooke noted that the condition “doesn’t really impact anything about my daily life” at present.

“That’s the scary part of Brugada syndrome. It just feels like a ghost around you,” she said. “Because there’s no warning signs, no symptoms. It’s just one of those things where all of a sudden one day, this certain thing in your heart can just stop, and you’re just gone.”

“It’s terrifying,” Cooke added. “It doesn’t impact anything that I do, or how I function, until one day, it maybe just could.”

Ashley Cooke’s Challenging Year

Cooke previously opened up about her health struggles in a TikTok post. In the same video, Cooke revealed that her heart condition isn’t the only reason the last year has been a challenging one.

“Mom had a heart attack, dad had cancer for the fifth time, both my grandmas passed away, went through a breakup, sister had a thyroid issue, I got diagnosed with a heart condition,” she said in the video. “Not to mention, all this happened while I was on tour, getting my first number one song awards. Amazing career year and terrible personal life year. So my life just felt like this 24/7.”

Things aren’t improving right now, either. In the video, she shared that her mom is “back in the hospital with chest pain, which is concerning for somebody that just had a heart attack less than four months ago and had a stent put in.”

In her nterview, Ashley Cooke gave an update on her mom’s condition.

“They said they don’t really know, it probably was a muscle spasm or something. Thankfully it wasn’t anything they needed to rush her into surgery for,” Cooke told the outlet. “All good, but definitely a scare. It reminds you that your parents could just not be here someday, and that’s terrifying.”
