3 Classic Rock Songs From Iconic Family Bands

Throughout the decades, there have been many family bands who have made music that has moved the masses. Sure, while many groups are born of friends in garages or basements, there are plenty of others that come together over the dinner table or while commuting in the family van to whatever weekend destination the parents have decided on.

Brothers, sisters, cousins—these relationships often help to form incredible musical projects. And perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in classic rock. Throughout the history of the style, family bands have been popping up with one member singing, one playing guitar, and others sharing the rest of the responsibilities.

We wanted to explore three prime examples of family bands throughout the history of classic rock here below. Indeed, these are three classic rock songs from iconic family bands.

“You Really Got Me” by The Kinks from ‘Kinks’ (1964)

When brothers Ray and Dave Davies decided to start a band in the early 1960s, they probably had no idea it would become one of the most influential rock groups in history. The Kinks may not be among the first wave of iconic classic rock groups. But, just about every band in that first wave is a fan of The Kinks. Some say they even invented amplifier distortion when Dave intentionally cut one of his speakers with a razor blade to get that buzzy sound.

“Barracuda” by Heart from ‘Little Queen’ (1977)

The Kinks were centered on two brothers. Likewise, the Seattle-born band Heart was centered on two sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson. The former sang and the latter played lead guitar. Together, they were one of the greatest rock duos in the history of the genre. Along with “Barracuda”, the band is known for tracks like “Crazy On You” and “Magic Man”. With giant, torrential vocals and guitars that could rattle the heavens, Heart was and remains a force of nature.

“Good Vibrations” by The Beach Boys (Single, 1966)

Three brothers and a cousin comprised the original lineup of this immortal group. The Hawthorne, California-born band the Beach Boys was built on a close connection and the kind of vocal harmonies that can only come from people who share DNA. Known for songs like “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “I Get Around”, their album Pet Sounds is one of the best rock albums ever. Fronted by the late Brian Wilson, the band’s song “Good Vibrations” will live on forever as an example of what the best of art can do.
