Paul McCartney‘s name will always be synonymous with the Beatles. But, in actuality, his time with that foursome was a blink of an eye compared to the expanse of his post-Beatles career. McCartney’s writing efforts with Wings were just as impressive as those that he produced with the Beatles. Below, find four Wings songs that we believe deserve just as much prestige.
“Band on the Run”
Now, we’re certainly not saying that “Band on the Run” isn’t a famous song. It is one of McCartney’s signature Wings tracks. However, there is still room for admiration for this song to grow. We could make a case for “Band on the Run” being a better song than many McCartney wrote for the Beatles. There is stiff competition, but never has his songwriting been as unabashed and brave as it is here. McCartney takes his listeners on a sonic journey, never fearing losing their attention. When discussing top McCartney writing efforts, “Band on the Run” should always be top of mind.
“Let Me Roll It”
The Beatles flexed their classic rock fandom on many occasions. Especially in their early days, the Fab Four wore their inspirations on their sleeve, calling to mind the likes of Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley. McCartney carried that affinity into the second leg of his career with Wings. You can hear it most notably in “Let Me Roll It”. On top of featuring one of the best guitar riffs in McCartney’s discography, “Let Me Roll It” sees him at his most straightforward. There is very little that is off-kilter about this song. McCartney dares to play it nice and easy with “Let Me Roll It”. That decision reaped big rewards.
“Arrow Through Me”
Unlike his Beatles bandmates, McCartney proved that he could produce top, pop-focused hits after the band broke up. “Arrow Through Me” is the perfect showcase of McCartney’s radio friendly streak with Wings. This grooving track is a floor-filler. Though McCartney will always be known as a rock legend, he makes a strong play for a R&B title here.
