4 Country Songs From 1993 That Every 90s Kid Still Knows Today

Who doesn’t love the country music of the 1990s? The entire decade has so many great hits, including these four songs. All out in 1993, they are so memorable that it’s likely that every 90s kid still knows them by heart today.

“Should’ve Been A Cowboy” by Toby Keith

“Should’ve Been A Cowboy” is Toby Keith’s first single and first No. 1 hit. The song, written solely by Keith, is part of Keith’s eponymous debut album.

Keith was inspired to write “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” when he was at a bar in Kansas and saw one of his middle-aged friends get turned down by a girl in favor of someone younger.

“About 15 minutes later, a young cowboy comes in–and off they go on the dance floor,” Keith recalls. “Everybody was making fun of him, and one of the guys said, ‘John, I guess you should’ve been a cowboy.’”

“Should’ve Been A Cowboy” says, “I should’ve been a cowboy / I should’ve learned to rope and ride / Wearing my six-shooter riding my pony on a cattle drive / Stealing the young girls’ hearts / Just like Gene and Roy / Singing those campfire songs / I should’ve been a cowboy.”

“When My Ship Comes In” by Clint Black

Clint Black’s first single of 1993 is “When My Ship Comes In”. The song, on his third studio album, The Hard Way, was written by Black and his frequent collaborator, Hayden Nicholas.

A two-week No.1 hit for Black, the optimistic song says, “She’ll find me waiting when my ship comes in / Gonna board and go whichever way the wind blows / I’ll be off to find myself once again in Puerta No-One-Knows / When my ship comes in.”

Black followed “When My Ship Comes In” with “A Bad Goodbye”, his duet with Wynonna Judd.

“Blame It On Your Heart” by Patty Loveless

Patty Loveless includes “Blame It On Your Heart” on Only What I Feel, her sixth album. The uptempo tune was written by Kostas and Harlan Howard.

The feisty song says, “Blame it on your lying, cheating, cold dead-beating / Two-timing, double dealing / Mean mistreating, loving heart.”

Also a two-week No.1 hit, “Blame It On Your Heart” became Loveless’s final No. 1 single until “You Can Feel Bad” in 1995.

“Wild One” by Faith Hill

“Wild One” is Faith Hill’s first single, and her first song to land at the top of the charts. The song, on Hill’s freshman Take Me As I Am album, stayed at the top of the charts for four weeks.

Written by Pat Bunch, Jaime Kyle, and Will Rambeaux, the chorus says, “She’s a wild one / With an angel’s face / She’s a woman-child / In a state of grace / When she was three years old on / her daddy’s knee / He said, ‘You can be anything you wanna be’ / She’s a wild one / Running free.“

“Wild One” is the first single to reach No. 1 in 1994. Four months later, Hill returned to the top spot with “Piece Of My Heart”.
