“Hot, Hot, Hot” by Buster Poindexter from Buster Poindexter (1987)
Released in 1982 by Arrow, David Johansen covered this track five years later under his persona Buster Poindexter. It’s a recognizable song to many for its repetitive, sticky chorus. It’s lively and fun. And it’s also a great song to listen to while you’re cooking and sipping your warm soup or after-dinner coffee. Who doesn’t want a hot meal? Well, this song practically puts it on a platter for you. Don’t forget to blow off the steam!
“I Melt With You” by Modern English from After the Snow (1982)
Cheese anyone? Just picture this: You’re in your kitchen and you just put a giant plate of shredded cheddar cheese-covered tortilla chips into the oven. You’ve got about 20 minutes to wait and watch through the clear oven door. All the cheese will do what …? Yes, it will melt! And that’s why this synth-driven tune is the perfect offering to play four or five times as you watch the well-lit oven do its job. Chef’s kiss!
“Whip It” by Devo from Freedom of Choice (1980)
Have you ever made batter? Meringue? Your own whipped cream? Well, it takes a lot of work. And sometimes you need a little helpful encouragement. It’s as if you’re at the gym and you’re bench-pressing a big weight and your pal is behind you barking positivity at you. You can do it, you can do it! Well, that’s what this track is telling you, too. Got some batter or meringue to make? Whip it! Whip it good! You can do it!
“Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm” by Crash Test Dummies from God Shuffled His Feet (1993)
While this song really has nothing to do with food, it’s the chorus that is useful for our purposes here. Perhaps you can find a version where the verses are muted but then when you get to the hummed chorus, you can pretend lead vocalist Brad Roberts is saying how much he loves your cooking. He’s saying, “Mmmm!” enthusiastically, rubbing his belly in satisfaction. Who doesn’t want a little positive reassurance? Indeed! Mmmmm!
