4 Supergroups That Have Been Lost to Time (But You Should Remember Them)

We all remember major supergroups like The Highwaymen and Cream. But what about the shorter-lived supergroups that have been somewhat lost to time? You might recognize a few of these “lost” supergroups on our list, but a few of them might be just obscure enough to evade your radar. Let’s take a look!

1. SuperHeavy

Remember SuperHeavy? If not, you’re not alone. SuperHeavy hasn’t gotten nearly as much love as Mick Jagger’s other project, a little band called The Rolling Stones.

In 2007, Jagger was dead-set on building a supergroup that could incorporate as many musical styles as possible. The result was SuperHeavy, which included Jagger, Eurythmics guitar player Dave Stewart, Damien Marley, Joss Stone, and A.R. Rahman. The band survived from 2009 to 2011 and produced just one album.

2. Ataxia

This notable band in the pool of lost supergroups was formed by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ famed guitarist John Frusciante. The experimental rock outfit Ataxia was a short-lived project for Frusciante, Fugazi bass player Joe Lally, and The Bicycle Thief’s Josh Klinghoffer.

Interestingly enough, Klinghoffer would become Frusciante’s replacement in Red Hot Chili Peppers just a few years after Ataxia would call it quits in 2004. The band itself only survived for a few weeks but yielded two entire albums, Automatic Writing and AW II.

3. Eyes Adrift

Did you know that Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic once formed his own supergroup? Everybody knows about Dave Grohl’s long-lived venture with Foo Fighters, but Eyes Adrift barely gets mentioned.

Novoselic put together the outfit with Curt Kirkwood of Meat Puppets and Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh. The core of the band was punk rock, but the decision to sprinkle in some country elements was… weird. They only released one album in 2002 and broke up in 2003.

4. Tinted Windows

This entry on our list of lost supergroups has to be the wildest

Picture this: Taylor Hanson (of boy band Hanson), James Iha (of Smashing Pumpkins), Bun E. Carlos (of Cheap Trick), and Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains Of Wayne) are in a room together. That alone is quite a weird happenstance. What’s even weirder is that they all vibed with each other well enough to form their power pop and garage rock-leaning supergroup, Tinted Windows. The band released just one album and toured for a bit before breaking up so its members could focus on other projects.
