The gallery was about to close
and I thought I’d seen them all
But I found I’d overlooked the one
that drew a gathering in the hall

They stood as silent soldiers
that dared not look away.
The hush of stillness broken
when I heard someone say

CHORUS
Lord, what did the artist know?
Did You whisper in his ear?
The canvas has faded some
but his thoughts remain so clear
I made my way through the crowd
and a painting came in view
Three crosses, two thieves and You

One by one they slowly walked away
as if they watched Him die
Heads shaking in disbelief
the minds that wondered why

As I surveyed the splendor
of the timeless masterpiece,
I couldn’t help but notice
His eyes were fixed on me

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE
No frame could quite contain
just what He did for us that day
With a cross as His easel
God’s perfect work of love was displayed

REPEAT CHORUS

Lord, what did the artist know?
Won’t You whisper it to me?
