6 Dark Country Songs About Death

The heart of country music is love songs and honoring where you come from. However, country music also has its share of songs about mourning, grief, and death. Letโ€™s look at a few famous examples of country songs about death; some of these entries might even surprise you.

1. โ€œWhen Iโ€™m Goneโ€ by Joey+Rory

When it comes to country songs about death, this one is a real punch in the gut. Especially because it ended up becoming a prophecy of sorts.

โ€œWhen Iโ€™m Goneโ€ was a hit song in 2012 for husband-and-wife musical duo Joey+Rory. The song is a love letter from someone who is dying to their beloved, offering them reassurance as their life is coming to an end. Joey Fleek would pass away from cancer only four years later, leaving behind her husband Rory.

2. โ€œDonโ€™t Let The Old Man Inโ€ by Toby Keith

This is one of Toby Keithโ€™s most famous songs, namely because it was the last one he would perform in front of cameras before passing away from cancer in 2024. โ€œDonโ€™t Let The Old Man Inโ€ is an introspective essay of sorts on mortality, aging, and regret. It was also featured in Clint Eastwoodโ€™s The Mule.

3. โ€œOver Youโ€ by Miranda Lambert

This song was a collaborative effort between Miranda Lambert and her former husband Blake Shelton. The song itself was inspired by the tragic passing of Sheltonโ€™s older brother in a car wreck when he was just a teenager.

Itโ€™s understandable why it was too difficult for Shelton to record the song for his own discography; he also hasnโ€™t performed it live much. Lambertโ€™s recorded version does it justice, though. It even won Song of the Year at the ACMs and CMAs in 2013 and 2012, respectively.

4. โ€œIf Tomorrow Never Comesโ€ by Garth Brooks

โ€œIf Tomorrow Never Comesโ€ by Garth Brooks is more than just a pretty song. Itโ€™s about treating the people you love well, as you never know when itโ€™ll be the last time you see them. In the context of the song, Brooks is ruminating on his relationship with his lover, questioning whether or not he truly let her know how much he loves her.

5. โ€œGo Rest High On That Mountainโ€ by Vince Gill

โ€œGo Rest High On That Mountainโ€ is one of the most well-known country songs about death out there, and itโ€™s a stunning one. This Vince Gill classic was inspired by the passing of fellow country artist and friend Keith Whitley, in addition to Gillโ€™s older brother.

The way he explores grief is so beautiful in this song. Gill releases his sorrows and heals knowing that their suffering is over. He even performed it live at George Jonesโ€™ funeral. Which brings us to our final entryโ€ฆ

6. โ€œHe Stopped Loving Her Todayโ€ by George Jones

This iconic and heartbreaking country song about death was recently voted the saddest country song of all time. One could say itโ€™s one of the greatest country tunes ever written. Itโ€™s certainly the saddest.

In โ€œHe Stopped Loving Her Todayโ€, Jones tells the tale of a man suffering from the effects of unrequited love. He vows to love the one who got away until the very end, which he does successfully. The song ends at his funeral, where that very lost love is in attendance.
