Willie Nelson’s brand speaks seemingly about peace, love, and music. However, what if history were to tell you that was not entirely the case? Well, it isn’t, as Nelson has in fact had an altercation to top all altercations. Not to spoil anything quite yet, but the altercation involved a couple of dudes, some shotguns, and a firefight stemmed from Nelson’s need to protect his daughter, Lana.

As you’ve probably already guessed, this altercation was the moment when Willie Nelson scored his infamous nickname “Shotgun Willie.” In addition to the unofficial title, this moment also inspired the title track of “Shotgun Willie.” The story is something that simply doesn’t happen these days in country music, and if it did, the artist in question would likely be condemned to the utmost degree. However, Nelson’s response in the firefight was—to many—justified, as he was simply doing his duty as a father.
Willie Nelson Fires Back
The altercation’s origins stem from the moment Nelson’s daughter, Susie, told her father that her sister, Lana, was being abused by her then-husband. Consequently, Willie Nelson drove to his daughter’s house, approached her abusive husband, and said that he would end his life if he ever laid a hand on his daughter again.
Nelson left, and by surprise, the husband and some of his friends followed Nelson home and began firing at his front porch. In retaliation, Nelson and his drummer, Paul English started firing back. It is unclear how long the firefight lasted. However, it ended when Nelson hit the other shooters’ car. Allegedly, when Nelson hit their car they surrendered and went on their way.
Inspiration for “Shotgun Willie”
The entirety of the song’s lyrics do not strictly pertain to the near-fatal shootout. Although, the song’s first and final verse came as a direct inspiration from the event. Particularly the lines, Bitin’ on a bullet and pullin’ out all of his hair / Shotgun Willie’s got all his family there.
So, that is the story of how Willie Nelson received his iconic nickname and became inspired to write his hit song. We all know Nelson does kung-fu and is considered to be an “Outlaw.” However, many people seemingly didn’t believe it was to this degree. Though, leave it to Willie Nelson to surprise you and subvert your preconceived notions. Nelson’s stories never cease to amaze anyone, even if you aren’t the biggest fan of his music.
