4 of the Best Acoustic Songs by Pearl Jam

Grunge music doesn’t always translate well into acoustic form. After all, the heart of the alt-rock genre is electric guitar distortion and production techniques that give the music more of an edge. That being said, Pearl Jam managed to deliver a few beautiful acoustic and unplugged sets through the years, most notably during their 1992 MTV Unplugged set. Let’s dive into a few Pearl Jam acoustic classics!

1. “Black”

“Black” is one of Pearl Jam’s biggest songs, and their MTV Unplugged version of the track is on another level. Eddie Vedder’s vocals are on another level in this version, and the resonator guitar only adds to the windy, mysterious, and almost heartbreaking energy of this hit from Ten.

2. “Nothingman”

This Pearl Jam acoustic track is a great example of Eddie Vedder’s ability to craft characters and stories that translate well in the grunge genre. “Nothingman” is an arresting song that, on the surface level, feels like a breakup tune. However, it’s a bit more complex than that. Vedder narrates the story of a man who puts the whole of his being into his relationship, only for pride to bring it all down.

3. “Just Breathe”

This acoustic at-home recording of “Just Breathe” from Backspacer is a quiet, underrated little gem. It was released on Vedder’s EP collection of stripped-down songs, Matter Of Time

In a way, it feels like this particular song was meant to be performed acoustically. It’s such a heartwrenching, reflective piece of work about confronting one’s own mortality and the people we love in our short amount of time on earth. Something about Vedder’s voice accompanied by only an acoustic guitar just gets under your skin. Existential crisis, anyone?

4. “Alive”

Another standout Pearl Jam acoustic performance from their MTV Unplugged set, “Alive” is an absolute delight to hear in a stripped-down fashion. Eddie Vedder was on his vocal A-game during this set, and that much is clear from the moment he jumps into “Alive”.

However, the beauty of this acoustic performance comes down to the sum of its parts. The drums, the guitars, the tone variations, the passion… It’s a truly incredible live performance.
