The Mavericks Singer Raul Malo Underwent Surgery To Remove Tumor From His Liver as Part of Cancer Treatment

While once exploring a solo career outside of The Mavericks, Raul Malo eventually returned to the band when the members decided to get back together in 2012. Continuing to perform and record music, in 2024, the singer revealed he suffered from cancer. Although needing to focus on his recovery and fight with cancer, Malo never lost sight of the stage. And while offering fans an update about his cancer battle, the singer revealed that The Mavericks needed to back out of one of their upcoming performances.

Sharing a video on his Instagram, Malo seemed in high spirits as he recalled needing to have a tumor removed from his liver back in December. Although not that long ago, he said, “I wanted to catch you up on my health as we go through this journey. Some of you know that I had liver surgery on December 10th. They successfully removed a tumor from the liver, and we are going into the fourth week of recovery, and they said 4-to-6 weeks recovery which would of course take me into the timing of the cruise and so we just want to give you fair warning that we will not be on the cruise and we are really sorry about that.”

Raul Malo Shares Replacements For The Mavericks

The cruise Malo happened to be talking about was the Sandy Beaches Cruise. While fans hoped to see The Mavericks on the ship, many shared their excitement that Malo was feeling strong once again, “I’m feeling strong. And even though I’m in a little bit of discomfort, like it’s really hard to hold a guitar up to my body, and I don’t know if I can sing because there’s one thing where you can recover, but you also have to be in performing shape, and I’m nowhere near that, at least not a performance worth writing about or talking about.”

Outside of posting the video on Instagram, Malo shared details about the band replacing The Mavericks on the cruise. He wrote in the caption, “The incredible Keb’ Mo’ and Tab Benoit have been added to the lineup to keep you dancing all night long. We appreciate your understanding & support and will see you on the water for next year’s Sandy Beaches Cruise!”

With Malo and The Mavericks promising to return on the stage and ship in the near future, Malo appeared in high spirits as he continues to fight cancer.
