Raul Malo Shares Health Update on Cancer Battle, The Mavericks Taking the Stage for First Time This Year

While exploring a solo career, Raul Malo found a home with the country band The Mavericks. First meeting Robert Reynolds during the 1980s, the two found common ground with a shared love for Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The two eventually formed The Mavericks, adding members along the way. Over the following decades, the band won awards and released over a dozen albums. And with a new year, it seems Malo is excited to hit the road again as the singer offered fans an update about his cancer battle.

Over the weekend, The Mavericks will take the stage for the first time in 2025. For fans of the band, they remember Malo announcing his fight with cancer just last year. With many excited to see the singer on the stage once again, Malo posted a video showing him exercising on Instagram.

Besides showing his path to recovery, Malo also captioned the post with a great deal of information. “Quick health update: recovery has gone well thankfully. Resting has lead to healing and feeling well enough to start exercising again. I can’t stress enough how important it is to move. And speaking of moving, I’m really looking forward to this weekends’ shows with our friends (Dwight Yoakam) and (49 Winchester).”

As for his upcoming concert, Malo saw it as a moment to see where his strength was at. “These shows will be a good barometer for me to be able to gauge my stamina. Our sets run approximately an hour with this lineup. The only shows moved so far this year (aside from the cruise) are our recent headlining shows. They conflicted with my chemo schedule.”

Raul Malo Staying Positive About The Future

With Malo already going into surgery to remove a tumor from his liver, the singer will once again go into the operating room. “The team is reasonably confident that after the colon surgery we should be done if the scans and tests agree. I think it’s fair to say that this is a fluid situation to a certain degree. We will keep you updated regularly. And if there are any disruptions to the touring schedule we will inform you as soon as possible. Anyways, thank you all for your kind words of encouragement and for your understanding of the situation. See you all in Atlanta.”

Fans quickly rallied around Malo, offering both love and support with comments stating, “Wise words. Being grateful for every day and blessing is a wonderful thing. Sending continued prayers for healing and strength.”
