A Look Back at Willie Nelson’s Annual 4th of July Picnic

Willie Nelson has hosted his 4th of July Picnic nearly every year since 1973. They canceled the event during the pandemic in 2020, but that was the only year that he didn’t hold a summer gathering somewhere in the United States. Usually, the picnic takes place in Nelson’s home state of Texas. However, he has hosted it in South Bend, Indiana, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kansas City, Missouri, Alberta, Georgia, and George, Washington in the past. Last year, it took place in Camden, New Jersey.

Nelson was inspired to start hosting his annual 4th of July celebration when he performed during the Dripping Springs Reunion in Dripping Springs, Texas in 1972. The three-day event included acts like Waylon Jennings, Hank Snow, Charlie Rich, Earl Scruggs, Tom T. Hall, and many more.

The next year, Nelson returned to Dripping Springs to hold his first annual event. While the annual event has faced several issues over the years, it never fails to draw thousands of country music fans.
