“I’d Kick His A– Too”: Dolly Parton Reveals Hilarious and Touching Glimpse Into What Life Was Like With Husband, Carl Dean

There are quiet homebodies, and then there is Carl Dean, the husband of Dolly Parton, who was famously so absent from the spotlight that some people questioned whether he ever existed. Laughable fake husband rumors aside, this was the dynamic that worked for the superstar and her no-nonsense, blue-collar husband over their decades-long marriage.

Parton rarely spoke about intimate details of her home life with Dean, instead focusing on how supportive he was of her vast and varied career. Ironically—and likely to his chagrin—Dean’s name was most prevalent in the press around the time of his death in March 2025.

But 20 years earlier, Parton had an interview with Gavin Martin in 2005 that revealed touching (and, in true Parton fashion, hilarious) insights into what life was like for the Deans at home in Tennessee.

Dolly Parton Shared A Glimpse Into Her Home Life With Carl Dean

Dolly Parton met her future husband, Carl Dean, when she first arrived in Nashville with dreams of making it as a songwriter. Neither she nor the handsome man she met outside of a laundromat could have guessed what the future held for them, both in terms of their long-lasting relationship and Parton’s meteoric rise to country music stardom and beyond. But as fate would have it, the two would marry, Parton’s career would blossom, and the couple found a way to make it work despite having very different career paths and tolerances for showbiz.

During a 2005 interview with Gavin Martin, Parton reiterated that her husband had no interest in being a part of the show business world. “He loves music, but he doesn’t sing. He has no desire to be around all that. So, it works good. We have just enough in common to have a good time, and we’re different enough to keep it interesting. We’re together enough to have fun; we’re apart enough to keep it interesting.”

Spending decades in the competitive music industry environment meant Dean acted as a sort of soothing contrast to the people Parton was usually around when she was working. “He’s a real country person,” she explained. “Well, he grew up in the city subdivision, but he has a simple way of looking at life. He has a great sense of humor, a good heart, good morals, good values…very loyal person, very devoted person, very honest person. He has so many qualities that I admire that would make you want to stay with a person that you could trust in all those ways. We don’t have show business friends. My friends are within my family and long-time friends that are mostly outside the business.”

A Lifetime Of Mutual Understanding, Respect, And Healthy Distance

Even when people were beginning to speculate that Carl Dean wasn’t a real person after all, merely a ruse Dolly Parton fabricated, the couple made no moves toward the spotlight. “He don’t like that,” Parton said when Gavin Martin asked her if she felt compelled to show off their very real relationship to the world. “He doesn’t want to be out there; he hates to have his picture made.” She continued, “He just does not want to be exposed to that. And I’ve never exposed him to it.”

Parton said the distance that her and Dean’s differing career paths provided helped keep them far enough apart that they never grew tired of one another. It also helped that both of them were incredibly loyal. “My husband would kick my a** if he knew I was with someone,” the “Jolene” singer joked. “It would break my heart, too, if I knew he was with somebody. I’d kick his a**, too.” Parton said that while they didn’t have an open marriage, “I have an open heart and an open mouth, and sometimes I talk too much, and sometimes I’m joking and people take it…you know, because people want to hear you say something.”

“He’s not insecure. I’m not insecure,” she continued. “We always assume that we’re going to always be there. We’re going to always be back and, until one of us dies, that’s probably where we’re going to be.”
