Jay Weinberg was Slipknot’s drummer for a decade between 2013 and 2023. Then, seemingly out of the blue, he learned that he had been fired from the band. While the sudden ousting from the band was a crushing blow to the longtime drummer, it didn’t dampen his passion for creating music. Last year, he joined Suicidal Tendencies and the supergroup Infectious Grooves. Now, after more than a decade of hard work, he’s preparing his debut solo album.

Jay Weinberg Discusses His Solo Project
Jay Weinberg said he is reticent to call his forthcoming release a “solo” project. He played all of the instruments, produced the record, and wrote the songs. However, he wasn’t alone in bringing his material to life. “I’m collaborating with many different vocalists who I’ve been inspired by. I’ve always wanted to do something like this,” he said.
“There are many people in life that we always meet, and it’s like, ‘Dude, you’re so rad. Let’s start a side project or something like that.’ And it’s difficult,” Weinberg said. “We all have lives. We all have our main things that we do, and life takes us in directions, and it’s hard to focus and embark on, like, ‘Hey, let’s make a record. Let’s start a band. Let’s do whatever.’” He added that it is much easier to write a song and take it to a vocalist whom he believes is right for the track.
Weinberg plans to debut some of his latest material in August at the Field of Vision Festival in Colorado. “It’ll be kind of filtered more through the collaboration I’m doing with Argus for it,” he said.
“That’s been a huge undertaking that I’m really excited about, hopefully getting out there starting i the fall or so,” he said. He also gave an idea of what listeners can expect from the project. “Sonically, it’s all stuff that I’ve always wanted to dive into. I think my influences from Neurosis and Interpol, and My Bloody Valentine show their face in this kind of material more so than it has in other music that I’ve been a part of writing or recording in the past.”
