There was a time when the thought of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham reuniting would’ve been laughable at best. When Buckingham left the band in the late ’80s, he sparked the dissolution of the Rumours lineup as a whole. At that time, it would’ve taken a monumental force to bring Nicks and Buckingham back together–or at least one that ranks big on the EF scale…

Oddly, it was a movie about daredevil tornado chasers that brought these Fleetwood Mac members to collaborate again. Learn more about how the ’90s blockbuster Twister inspired Nicks to make amends with Buckingham below.
The Unexpected Story Behind a Brief But Meaningful Fleetwood Mac Reunion
Nicks’ music has been an integral part of several films. Despite her feeling that writing a song for a movie is just as good as “dumping it out the window,” she did contribute an original song to Twister.
Aptly named “Twisted,” Nicks penned this song on a personal note. She somehow saw herself in a film about storm chasers, likening it to the chaotic life of a rock star.
“I had my friend Rebecca read the script,” Nicks once explained. “She then gave me the Reader’s Digest condensed version so I could decide whether to do it or not. As she explained it to me, I realized that this really was my story. It was about people who had extreme jobs – like chasing tornadoes, or being in a rock band. I really handcrafted this song for the movie.”
To bring this song to life, Nicks tapped Buckingham as a duet partner. This was the first time the two musicians had stepped into the studio together outside of the Fleetwood Mac scope since the early ’70s. Revisit “Twisted” below.
Official Reunion
While it’s tender to think about just Nicks and Buckingham joining forces, their duet dominoed into a full-scale reunion for Fleetwood Mac. Not too long after the release of this track, the Rumours iteration of the band got back together for their now-iconic live album, The Dance.
Of course, this brief reunion wouldn’t last, with different members of the band leaving at various times. But, it was a rare still moment in Fleetwood Mac’s disordered history, like being in the eye of a storm.
