Josie Salvitti (Josie Sal), Kelli Johnson and Mike Riley are the American Songwriter Sounds Like Summer Promotion runner-ups for their song “Redneck Weekend.” American Songwriter caught up with Josie to get the story behind their Summer hit.
How long have you been songwriting?
I have been songwriting for almost 2 years now!
Why did you enter American Songwriter’s Sounds Like Summer Promotion?
I entered this song because I believe it brings that summer excitement to life, and I hope it reminds everyone of their own version of a “Redneck Weekend.”
What was the inspiration behind your song, “Redneck Weekend”?
I wrote “Redneck Weekend” to capture the fun and memories of the summers I spent growing up with family and friends. It’s a feel-good anthem that celebrates those wild, carefree weekends we all seem to have in our own way.
Who are your all-time favorite songwriters and why?
I’m a total lyric girl! I love songs that tell a real story. Megan Moroney, Billy Joel, and Lainey Wilson are some of my favorite artists because their words make you feel something. That’s the kind of music I want to make too.
Are you planning to release any new music this year?
“Redneck Weekend” comes out August 1st with a music video that totally captures the summer feeling! Currently, I am working on possibly an EP or album next.
What would you tell other artists who are considering entering the contest?
Why not! It’s like my dad says all the time, “Why not you?!” American Songwriter gives me a platform to share my songs, and I’m so thankful!
