Britney Spears grew up with the world watching. She made the painful–and painfully awkward–transition into womanhood with eyes trained on her every move. Naturally, that transition became all the more uncomfortable. She detailed her move into adulthood in “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.” It’s one of her trademark tracks for a reason. Uncover the meaning behind this ballad, below.

Behind the Meaning of Britney Spears’ “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman”
I used to think
I had the answers to everything
But now I know
Life doesn’t always
Go my way, yeah
Feels like I’m caught in the middle
That’s when I realize
I’m not a girl
Not yet a woman
All I need is time
A moment that is mine
While I’m in between
Featured in the feature film Crossroads, Spears powerfully sings about being in between childhood and adulthood. Contrary to the belief of many young people, the answers don’t all of the sudden come rushing in once you reach a certain age. This is met with the painful realization that adulthood won’t be as easy as it seems from the outside looking in.
We can only imagine that fact rings even more true when you’re someone like Spears, who has to come to that realization while the world watches. It’s no secret that Spears didn’t have the easiest transition into adulthood. This song feels palpably somber in the context of Spears’ conservatorship and slew of scandals.
Despite her difficulties, Spears stands resilient in this track. I‘m not a girl / There is no need to protect me, she sings. Though we’re not sure if she truly felt this way or was convincing herself, it remains an empowering statement.
If you’re in need of a push forward in your life, this song is more than adequate fuel. Revisit this Spears classic, below.

I’m not a girl
There is no need to protect me
Its time that I
Learn to face up to this on my own
I’ve seen so much more than u know now
Don’t tell me to shut my eyes
I’m not a girl
Not yet a woman
All I need is time
A moment that is mine
While I’m in between
