We’re big fans of Jonny Fritz, the joke-cracking, countryfied songwriter formerly known as Jonny Corndawg. By mixing the old-school sounds of honky tonk and outlaw country with equal doses of humor and heart, he’s been carving out his own space in roots music. Today, we’re happy to premiere his third album, Dad Country, which doubles as his first release for ATO Records.
Fritz has always kept good company, sharing the stage with top-tier acts like Mumford & Sons and Dawes while promoting his past two albums. Appropriately enough, Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith co-produced Dad Country. The group recorded the house at Jackson Browne’s Los Angeles studio, but it’s the entire American landscape — the small town bars, the big city girls, the oddball characters who populate the stretches of land in between — that fuels these tunes.
“The things that get me to want to write a song are the things that I find funny, and the things I find funny are the things that offend people or are swept away or go unnoticed or unsaid,” he explains. “They carry so much more weight because they’ve never been touched on.”
