About Matlock’s History with the Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols formed in 1975 with Matlock, Jones, Cook, and lead singer John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten). Matlock is credited with co-writing most of the songs on the band’s sole studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols (1977). Among those tunes are “God Save the Queen,” “Anarchy in the U.K.,” “Pretty Vacant,” “No Feelings,” and “Submission.”

Matlock left the group in early 1977, according to him because of conflicts with Lydon. He was replaced by Sid Vicious, a Sex Pistols fan who had little to no experience playing bass.

Th Sex Pistols broke up in 1978, and Vicious died of a drug overdose in February 1979.

In 1996, Matlock and the rest of the Sex Pistols’ original lineup reunited for a six-month trek dubbed the Filthy Lucre Tour.

The Sex Pistols also toured in 1996, 2002, 2003, and 2007-2008.

In August and September of 2024, Matlock, Jones, and Cook reunited to play a series of U.K. shows with a new singer, Frank Carter, as Lydon had expressed no interest in performing with his ex-bandmates again.

The group, now billed as Sex Pistols Featuring Frank Carter, have lined up some new concerts in Europe this summer. Among them are two shows opening for Guns N’ Roses, on July 24 in Vienna, Austria, and July 28 in Luxembourg.
