“Stay All Night,” like the rest of Still Shakin is a celebration of the sound forged by North Mississippi Allstars on their debut album Shake Hands with Shorty 25 years ago. This track has a deep psychedelic groove that is impossible to avoid. It is a near-perfect example of “Modern Mississippi Music,” the phrase the band invented to describe their sound.

Luther Dickinson on the Latest North Mississippi Allstars Track
Earlier this week, North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson spoke to American Songwriter about “Stay All Night.”
“In the ’90s, we would play weekend shows around the South. We would race home after the Saturday show, driving overnight to sleep all day until it was time to go to Junior Kimbrough’s Juke Joint, a truly enchanted, ramshackle nightclub on the side of a dark, two-lane highway,” Dickinson recalled. “The multi-generational musical families of Junior and R.L. Burnside would take turns playing the anthems of North Mississippi for a moonshine corn liquor-fueled, mixed crowd of old-timers dancing with the wild-eyed underaged students from the university and musicians,” he added.
“In true folk music fashion, each family would play their own versions of the same songs with each family member even having their own stylistic version of the same songs,” Dickinson explained. “This felt totally natural to Cody and I, who grew up watching our father, Jim’s, community doing the same thing with their repertoire,” he added.
“Though always a Junior Kimbrough favorite, NMA has never recorded ‘Stay All Night’ until now, featuring Junior’s son, Robert Kimbrough, on vocals and guitar and NMA bandmate Joey Williams (Blind Boys of Alabama) as well as Jojo Hermann (Widespread Panic),” Dickinson said of the special guests on the song. He also noted that Kimbrough recorded his vocals and guitar at Duwayne Burnside’s Juke Joint, which is “just down the road from Junior’s old spot.”
Still Shakin hits record stores and digital streaming platforms June 6 via New West Records.
