Tragically, on May 11, 1981, reggae legend Bob Marley passed away at only 36 years old. He left behind a legacy that is still incomparable. And sadly, Marley’s death was notably controversial.

In 1977, Marley was diagnosed with a malignant form of melanoma in his right big toe. The cancer in question was a type that was easy to miss, and it had already advanced significantly by the time Marley sought the aid of medical professionals. Doctors recommended that Marley’s toe be amputated.
However, Marley refused, citing that it would affect his ability to perform and also citing his religious beliefs in Rastafarianism. For reference, that particular religion maintains that any form of bodily amputation or mutilation goes against their God.
Marley suffered an injury to the toe during a soccer game in the late 1970s, which prompted a widespread urban legend that his cancer was caused by the injury. The injury did cause an infection, but the malignant melanoma that Marley suffered from had already existed.
Marley opted for nail removal and a skin graft. He continued touring for the rest of the 1970s, but his cancer continued to progress. In 1980, Marley collapsed, and it was discovered that the cancer had spread to his brain and lungs. He stayed at a clinic in Germany that specialized in alternative cancer treatments for some time, but it was simply not enough. Marley died shortly after a flight from Germany to Miami, Florida, from complications related to untreated melanoma.
The Legacy of Bob Marley Lives On
While many remember Bob Marley for his controversial religious beliefs and his death, which many believe was entirely avoidable, he is better known for the life (and music) he made. He was a major pioneer of reggae music, and his distinctive style of singing and writing songs has been emulated by many through the years. However, nobody comes close to Bob Marley.
“One Love”, “I Shot The Sheriff”, “No Woman, No Cry”, and many other hit singles are still in rotation today. Marley is considered to be one of the best-selling musicians of all time, too. He is believed to have sold an estimated 75 million albums around the world.
His family has carried on his torch, too. Many of his children and grandchildren are still making music today, and many of them continue to perform Marley’s music live.
