The term “singer-songwriter” conjures myriad cliches; perhaps foremost among them is the image of the sad, white guy unspooling confessional lyrics over three or four chords of finger-picked acoustic guitar.

For some artists, the moniker can feel like an albatross, a weighty expectation that only serves to stunt artistic growth. Apparently, this has become the case for Seattle musician David Bazan. On his forthcoming album Blanco, Bazan, who formerly helmed the band Pedro the Lion, bids adieu to his more acoustic-leaning singer-songwriter solo past in favor of more expansive sonic climes, replete with drum machines and synthesizers.

Check out his new direction below in the form of “Oblivion,” one of the standout tracks from Blanco, which drops May 13 via Barsuk Records.

Blanco track list:
Both Hands (Over My Eyes)
Oblivion
Kept Secrets
With You
Trouble With Boys
Teardrops
Little Landslide
Someone Else’s Bet
Over Again
Little Motor
