Vince Gill Recalls Nearly Starting a Band with Joe Walsh Before Joining the Eagles

After Glenn Frey died in 2016, the Eagles knew they wanted to carry on. So, they reached out to Vince Gill to fill his slot. However, the surviving members of the band didn’t just pull the “One More Last Change” singer’s name out of a hat. He has proven time and again that he can work both solo and within a band. At the same time, his talent speaks for itself. However, that was only part of it. Gill also had built friendships with members of the band before Frey’s death. That was part of the deciding factor for them.

In an interview, Gill discussed joining the Eagles and the relationships he had built with band members over the years. During the chat, he revealed that he and Joe Walsh had discussed starting a jam band before Frey died and he joined the iconic rock group.

Vince Gill Almost Started a Jam Band with Joe Walsh Before Joining the Eagles

During the interview, Vince Gill revealed that he knew Glenn Frey well because they shared the same manager after the Eagles split. Additionally, he was one of several country and roots musicians who appeared on Don Henley’s 2015 solo album Cass County. Then, he talked about his relationship with Joe Walsh.

“Joe and I met at the crossroads shows,” Gill recalled. “We wanted to do a band like the Traveling Wilburys together where we might get Michael McDonald, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, or something and have this really cool little fun jam band. But then, this tragedy happened with the passing of Glenn.”

Gill’s Plans After the Eagles

The Eagles are currently on a massive farewell tour. The band’s members intend to go their separate ways when the tour ends and lay the band to rest. Vince Gill plans to play with them until they decide to hang it up. He already has plans for when the band splits.

In an interview with Guitar World earlier this year, Gill revealed his post-Eagles plans. “I’m always working on new music and another record,” he said. “There’s always some sort of song I’ve got going, and over the last few years, I’ve written well over 100 songs. When things shut down during the pandemic, and no one was doing anything, I found that to be a great time for creativity,” he added.

“When the Eagles finally shut it down, I’ll go back to singing my hillbilly songs and playing my white Tele. There’s some kind of magic in that. I can attest to that,” he stated.

If fans are lucky, he and Joe Walsh might get around to putting together that jam band they were talking about so many years ago.
