While only spending a few years in country music, Megan Moroney already got a taste of how powerful the internet can be. Although producing a promising career in the music industry with hits like “Tennessee Orange”, Moroney quickly learned about the dark side of fame and how the internet can create stories out of nowhere. Recently, Moroney found herself being compared to Carrie Underwood after fans criticized the former American Idol winner for performing at the presidential inauguration. Not wanting to be at the center of a feud with Underwood, Moroney quickly cleared the air.

As Underwood showcased her talents when performing “America the Beautiful” during the inauguration, some fans jumped online to blast the performance. At the time, comments included, “Almost all the way through megan moroney’s Am I Ok? album, and holy crap! no wonder she’s taking carrie underwood’s spot.” Just a sample of the backlash Underwood received, Moroney jumped to her defense.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Moroney didn’t believe in tearing other female singers down for a performance. “I’m like, ‘Why am I getting brought into this? I’m happy that they relate to my music … [but] I’m never happy tearing down another woman.”
Megan Moroney Dealt With Her Own Rumors
Although not sure if she would have performed at the inauguration, she knew the answer was always love. “I come from a really big family, with each side of the [political] spectrum. And I’ve found that you can’t change anyone’s mind. The best thing I can do is love them. That’s what I want to give to my fans, too. My music is there, so hopefully, they can find comfort.”
Knowing how powerful a rumor can be, Moroney needed to set the record straight when fans claimed she and Riley Green were in a secret relationship. When both singers happened to vacation in St. Barts with separate parties, fans quickly thought love was in the air. But Moroney insisted, “He was individually on his vacation with his friends. St. Barts is a popular place! It’s one of those things where if you know someone on a small island, you’re like, ‘Oh, sh*t, you’re here too.’ So it was fun.”
If that wasn’t enough, she made it crystal clear, adding, “Just because we’re hanging out doesn’t mean we’re romantically dating.”
